Plant Heritage North East is one of the largest and liveliest of the Plant Heritage branches.
We hold monthly indoor meetings in Ponteland Memorial Hall during the off-gardening season from October to May and try to have a wide range of speakers. Over the last couple of years we’ve learned about bee keeping, how to propagate daffodils and snowdrops, plant DNA sequencing, how to photograph gardens like a professional, and the restoration of the gardens at Muncaster Castle and Durham Botanic Garden to name but a few.
During the summer our attention turns to outdoors, when we put our energies into our members’ plant sale in May and also our plant fair for local nurseries and garden accessories in July. In August we have our garden party for members only and not an event to be missed!
For more details of our annual programme of events check out the Events calendar.
We hold two sales each year:
- in May we have the Great North Plant Sale which consists entirely of plants propagated and grown by our members, so you can be certain that they will do well in our northern climate. This is always held at Kirkley Hall in Ponteland where you can also take the opportunity to look around their Zoological Gardens, so there’s plenty to do for all the family.
- July sees us hosting the Great North Plant Fair which is an excellent opportunity to stock up on plants and sundries from local nurseries and traders, and to sample our delicious home made teas. Entry includes access to the Blagdon Hall gardens and grounds, which are only open a handful of times every year for events such as these.
For more details of these sales have a look at our Events calendar.
Trips and Garden Visits
As well as all of our regular activities we try to organise a trip or two each year. One is generally a residential trip over three or four days, and this has taken us from Scotland to northern France, when we’ve had the privilege to visit gardens and nurseries not usually open to the general public.
Other trips include, for example, coach trips to Cumbria or the Harrogate Flower Show and to local nurseries which again don’t usually open to the public.
As we organise these we will publish details on our Events calendar.
We also sometimes hold workshops for our members in subjects such as propagation. These are usually held locally around Ponteland. Again, keep your eye on the Events calendar for details.
